You already know. It's someone who says there isn't necessarily a God. Someone who doesn't have to invent a magical land far far away where they go when they die to get rewarded for stuff they should have done simply out of the goodness of their hearts.
Whereas church people are the type who want to know "What's in it for me"? so they got a goofy religon that correlates with the need. They are rather needy, selfish people with not a lot of self-honesty, and they teach their children likewise.

A Muslim scholar put it the best, he said an atheist is closer than a pagan. Since he already believes that there are no false deities( multiple gods e.t.c) all that is left is for him to believe in the one true God.
