I was watching food network last night, and The Lady, Paula Deen, and her sons were talking about when they were poor, and the sons decorated a coat rack. How clever! They make a similar thing now for a stocking hanger, for the fireplace mantel deprived.
Any live plant, or tree, that has sturdy branches, would do, you would have to keep the ornaments on the light side, so as not to break the limbs. Talk to your local nursery people, they could advise you on a tree that was suitable for indoors, how to care for it. You can grow a citrus tree yourself, from seed, but it will take a few years before it is sizable enough to decorate!
Some branches off of a tree, [a big branch, or individual limbs], in a pot with plaster of paris base, would be cute, for a natural tree with nuts and pinecones, or berries, or for country ornaments.
For trees, they would be have to be sturdy enough to light and decorate. You could keep the lights year round. Our mall goes out into the plants, and hang little ornaments and bows on everything.
Get an atificial small tree, white or green or whatever, keep it out year round, buy ornaments for every season and holiday, Easter, Valentines, halloween, spring, fall . They make stylized trees in wood and silver and brass, that hold just a few ornaments, if you are creative, you could make one.
Lighted topiaries would be gorgeous. It is just wooden dowels, with styrofoam balls, and artificial greenery. You could battery light or string lights to an outlet, change the color of the bow, and stick a few flowers or berries of the season in. I have seen large, and small ones, indoor and outdoor. The double ones, with ivy as the greenery, are especially pretty. The only trick is to make sure that strofoam is stuck to theat dowel really well, so the weight of the lights won't sink it into the pot, and to put the dowel in plaster.
Hope this gives you some ideas! Merry Christmas!

If you are located in the south where there are palm trees, why not decorate one. There are so many types of plants and trees that you could decorate. Go to a greenhouse and/or look around you.
