We all live in drainage basins. Take a cup of water and pour it out on your driveway. It will follow the path of least resistance to the ditch, which leads to a stream, which leads to a river, which leads to a larger river, which leads to a lake, shich leads to another river, which drains into the ocean. Simplistic explaination, I know, but it demonstrates the model.
Living beside rivers has it's good and bad aspects. Rivers which flood on a periodic basis typically have some of the highest quality soils on the planet, resulting fom the silt deposited from the regular flooding. Look at Bangledesh, which has horrible flooding, but whose soil is so rich it's said that if you plant your foot on Bangledesh, you;ll grow more toes.
The down side to living near a river is the flooding, which is not always a certain thing. Some rivers flood, some don't, depending on the topography, etc, of the valley.

the drainage basin is literally where the water drains to when the river overflows, so unless you wish to make a living destroying everything by water, I'd steer clear
