It's not just Americans that are consuming transfat.. oh we're spreading the love baby. That's right. By the way, I read somwhere that they are outlawing trans fat in NYC. I can't remember where, not even sure if it passed. Anyway, HEVS had the best answer on here. It is impossible to ride your bike to work, believe me if I could I would. I work 18 miles from home. And it seems like no matter what city I've ever lived in, that's always been the case. You almost have to live within a big city to not use a car, but then I would utilize the public transport along with a bike if I lived in a big city. I do live in a big "geographical" city. Jacksonville, Florida, it's the biggest city in the US 847 square miles. Hard to not use your car here. You have to make time to exercise, but by the time you get home it's 7:30, sheesh! We need to change our corporate culture of how we work, when that happens things will change. Which probably will occur right after China takes over economically for us, should be great.

I just came back from a 3 month tour of the states and have to say that it seems to be the case that, unless you're in a city, where there are good public transport links and the capacity to walk to various amenities, there is no way people can get around conveniently without a car. American towns are so spread out, it is virtually impossible to get from A-B without a car. Hence the lack of exercise. Petrol is much cheaper too so it does not have the same economic impact on families.

Also food portions are bigger (lots bigger from my experience of eating out!) and much cheaper so there is more incentive to eat more. I had to really watch how much I ate as well as what I ate when I was out there but you know what, I came back to the UK a few pounds slimmer!

I didn't have a very good opinion of Americans before I went to the USA as I had lived with a couple (one from Michigan, one from New Orleans) in France about 7 years ago and they were both numpties. But having been, I can definitely say they do the best breakfasts in the world and probably have some of the best service in the world too. Almost everyone I met was helpful and friendly and I shall definitely be going back!

Because they haven't read Fast Food Nation yet, but seriously this is a first world problem not simply an American one. Rates of obesity are climbing in every rich country even in the far east which traditionally boasts the best diets in the world, I've read that it's a growing problem in china where almost 23% of the population are overweight and 8% clinically obese (ie. 60 million). To tack this all onto the US is unfair but it must be said that the lifestyle choices which have caused this situation are inspired by American ideals.

I have seen it in all the European countries that I have been in, fast food joints breed like mushrooms and take over city centres, cities themselves become more and more car orientated, it seems almost every business can offer a drive through service and people don't want to walk long distances through through the smog caused by traffic to get to their services. Large out of town super shopping centres become the norm where you can drive and get all of your shopping under one roof so there is no need to walk to the corner shop for your dinner, and as you leave the shopping centre you pop through the drive thru.

The ubiquity of the internet and computing in telecommunications takes so much of the leg-work out of life that we have time to be lazy and so we spend it watching television and living vicariously through the impossibly beautiful, slim and intelligent protagonists of whatever fluff is the current flavour of the month.

The picture that is emerging is the deadly hangover of the bright and optimistic 1950's American dream, cars, television and domestic appliances for everyone, rapid apparently clean food and always someone else to deal with the unpleasant side-effects. Will we ever wake up from this dream? It will take some radical rethinking in government policy and will also require an end to the hypocrisy that allows the likes of McDonalds to dress up their slop with a bit of lettuce and call it a healthy option thus giving them some lucrative exemptions not to mention luring some people to eat there who would never have done previously because of their health or the stigma attached to eating there.

There's no easy answer, it's change yourself or accept your fate.

A good half of americans have never had to worry about having food on te table and if there is enough for everyone. If we "dont have time" to make a decent lunch we can drive threw around a building to order a cheap meal made with poor quality meat and be on our marry way. And family meals where mom or dad spends an hour in the kitchen cooking , cutting fresh vegtable and serving them warm on the table where everyone gathers around is nearly unheard of.
We don't excersize because why walk down the street when you can get in the car and only move tyour foot and wrists.
We are so tired because we work 40 hours a week have to worry about whose going to bring little Suzy to the mall so she can improve her social status by standing in the mall for an hour or two and who will pick up little Billy from practice. And we watch television because turning it off to talk, or go out and walk or play or ride a bike is obviouslly toooooo hard.

I thinlk everyone in every country should spend a week in a country where they do have to worry about if they will eat tonight , malls don't exist, MTV is unheard of and they work about 80 hours to just maintain food supplies and the home.

I hate to point it out but it's becoming a trend everywhere, at least where there are fast food outlets, the British have overtaken the Germans as the fattest Europeans. It is because of ignorance, laziness and stupidity, and I blame the Americans for starting the trend which is making everyone else into useless fat lazy bastards.

I am not American and I am not English, but I don't think Americans or English are generally lazy or fat. It is maybe for a small but noticeable part of them. But aren't you like that so that you can see them ?

Because we can afford to be. We are highly educated which means we can get good jobs that pay for our SUV's. Why would we ride a bike or walk when we can drive and get there faster? That leaves more leisure time. Also, lots of people have jobs an hour away so they have to drive.

We eat fast food because its cheaper and takes less time. Therefore, we have more leisure time and more money to spend on vacations and SUV's

We are generally lazy because we can afford to be. We are also smart enough to know that by eating fast food and driving SUV's we have more time to be lazy. Those of you who walk or ride your bike to work and cook all of your meals have less leisure time.

We are also wealthy enough to pay for the medical attention that we will need from being lazy and eating fast food.

Because American provides unhealthy food it is greasy, fat, but yet still taste good.

We eat all that bad food because it taste good, but we are not aware that the food is bad for us.

I am not saying that I am fat but I eat that kind of food, but you don't see me/everyone looking how much cal. or fat is in the food.

But everyone should be aware of what we are eating, but no one cares about there health. they are to occupied that the food taste good.

I bet if they knew what was in it then they probably wouldn't eat it.

But that is there fault for not caring and getting so fat that they can't move/ or they die of there own fat.

The world isn't fair, and let's face it, there's not that much difference between the USA, Canada, and GB. The curmmy cheap food is the culprit in all the advanced world, I have read online. But my, aren't you the one full of jolly good Christmas cheer?
