Nicolas Anelka was a great bit of business, bought for £500,000 and sold for £23m. So was Tore Andre Flo, bought for £300,000 and sold for £12m. Kevin Doyle is also proving to be a snip, as was Kevin Phillips in his heyday.
I think the best bargain, though, has to be either Peter Schmeichel (not sure of the exact figure but it was peanuts compared to the £32m Juventus paid for Gianluigi Buffon), or Eric Cantona at £1.2m. He'd already won the old First Division title with Leeds United and then went on to be the catalyst for virtually all of Manchester United's success in the following years. OK, he'd retired by the time of THAT season in 1999, but the man is a legend, and he and Schmeichel were the difference between United being a very good side and a great side.

Kevin Doyle - Reading FC.

Bought for £75,000 last summer and scored 16 goals in the Championship and got promoted. Now in the Premiership has 8 goals (1 behind Kanu and Drogba) and is taking the Premiership by storm.

I'm with the reading guy, Kevin Doyle is proving to be one of the best buys ever... 75,000 (which is sod all in football terms) and he's banging goals past premiership old boys...

As a villa fan, i can't really claim we've ever done much as a way of great transfer dealing the last few years... but fortunately we have a great youth system here with players like Davis, Ridgewell, Agbonlahor, Luke Moore, Gary Cahill all shining through...

although it pains me to say this it has to be cantona and schmicael for utd.
to get a player of cantonas class for a cool £1 million (what ever howard wilkinson was thinking the day he sold him i'll never know. just shows how good a manager he was!!!). just oozed pure class from every pore.
as for schmicael. 500000 for the man who completes a jigsaw and helps form a 10 year dynasty and bring a sleeping giant (and utd fans they where nearly dead in the water)back to life.
people can talk about anelka and all those guys sold on for big money but they never really has the impact on the english prem as these guys did for manure

I would imagine Eric Cantona for Man U. Dirt Cheap!
He was what made the difference to a good team to a winning team and sold millions in merchandising.

Definately Anelka when he joined arsenal

Bought for next to nothing and sold for 100 times the amount a few years later. Scored so many goals for the gunners...a truely unbelievable signing
