If you don't mind doing without the attachments the eureka model S647 is one of the best for cleaning carpets, not hard floor. the metal brush roll makes it almost hair proof, plus it takes a bag which is large and inexpensive (there is no good bag less vacuum)

I like my Wind Tunnel. It has a HEPA filter bag that keeps dander and dust inside, so it doens't come back out in the exhaust. I like having a bag that can be sealed and discarded, rather than loose dust flying all over the place when discarding.

I got the Wind Tunnel instead of a Dyson. I figure I can hate vacuuming for $225 as much as I can for $500.

I have a little Bissell Butler I got at costco years ago for $80 that does the job for me, but I have no carpet, only hardwood, tile and throw rugs. I currently have two double coated dogs and two cats and this works just fine for me.

For carpets, I have a friend that swears by the Dyson.

Years ago when I had five dogs, four of them double coated huskies, I used a shop vac with an extra dust filter...every darn day. It was loud, but very very effective.

As the former owner of a now dead Windtunnel & my current Dyson Animal, I can say that my thumbs up goes to the Animal. I've had mine for well over a year and other than minor clean up (remove hair, etc. from beater bar, rinse filter) I've never had a moments trouble with my pricey little baby. As far as loose dust, I take the container to the dumpster & empty it.
