Goldfish are quite hardy, and LIKE cold water. I thought I could kill off my son's goldfish that he got tired of by putting it in a 300 gallon tank that I set up outdoors with no filter, no pump, no lights, heater, or even FOOD. Two years later, they're doing just fine! It sounds like yours are overcrowded, and too warm. That allows diseases to thrive, as well as the fish. You might consider putting them outside in a pond instead.

Fantails need a minimum of 10 gallons each when they are babies and 20+ each when adults so right there that could be your problem. In such a small tank the ammonia, which is deadly, builds up very quickly. Keeping the fish in the bag just floating in the water doesn't get the fish used to the water, only the temp but if the Ph is different it can cause them to go into shock and can die. So the next time you get a fish let the bag float but every 15 mins add some of the tank water into the bag for around an hour then scoop the fish out of the bag and place it in the tank with as little bag water as possible. Your cousins fish may still be alive but they not only aren't thriving they are actually slowly dying. Those fish can grow 12-18 inches and in a 6 gallon tank that isn't going to happen so they will become stunted and their organs will continue to grow until they can't anymore and the fish will die, that is if they don't die before then because of toxic water.

Maybe they are not being fed enough. I just had a fish problem. There was a disease in the tank. All the tetras and guppies died. I think 8 of them died in one day. The zebra fish didn't die though. Take a water sample to the pet store and see if they can analyze it. There may be a disease that's killing them off. My cousin has a fish that is about 9 inches long and is older than he is (he is 16, the fish is 18). Fish live for a long time if they are taken care of.

there could be a number of reasons for them dying. Stress, ph balance in tank off, they are sick or water is containmenated. or just they are old fish. Gold fish dont live long anyway.

Goldfish need to be in a minimum 30 gallon tank for one fish or you will drastically shorten their lifespan. Did you know they can live for over 20 years and reach 14 inches in length? a good place for info is www.kokosgoldfish.com

Goldfish need a lot bigger tank and they are very social so more than one would be a good idea.
