Yes, I think it does. have you ever heard the saying, "Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it". I dont know who said it, but it makes sense. For example, its like touching a hot stove, if you touch it once you will learn to be more cautious next time, that can be proven for every aspect of your life.

If you understand the past, you will have learned what mistakes were made, and that will have a positive effect on your future choices and decisions.

understanding the past helps you to understand the present in better ways....it helps you to deal with problems now and to understand your own responses..

for instance if you meet a person who is cold and distant and withdraws from human contact you might think they are like that because they dont like people....or because they are nasty or sadistic or whatever...... but if you know that person went through a traumatic situation and lost loved ones you would understand why they seem to be cold and distant... fearing attachment....not wanting to be close to anyone again...

The same applies to yoursself... If you understand what has happened to you and how it affected you it is easier to build some compassion for yourself... compassion is necessary for you to heal the parts of you that have been hurt...

For me it is okay that I dont lke people to touch my neck... I was choked in my adolecesence and my instinct is to lash out if my neck is touched.... I give myself compassion about that and allow myself to say "No dont touch my neck...." I give my self the right to feel safe....

However when my thyroid played up and the doctor had to touch my throat I had to face my fear and let him touch my throat..... I talked to the doctor about what had happened and he talked me through what he was going to do and how it was important for him to find out what was going on.... Because I was kind and accepting of myself because I understood my past I could overcome this problem and work it out... and it helped I had a darn good doctor... who also understood my past...

Understanding the past is not an instant cure all.... but it helps you to find the answer to some of todays problems.. and it helps you to find the path towards healing...

I believe that understanding your reactions to things that happened in the past will help a person in the present.

Reactions that worked, you hold on to, reactions that didn't you can reconsider.

Evolve or perish

Know your history, and you'll know your future. If you don't, it just keeps repeating itself.
