Things are starting to get a little cramped at my family's house; just wondering how other people deal with that. Eating, say, buffet-style and sitting wherever in the house would work, but seems inferior to everybody sitting down...

I'm still interested in what everybody does no matter whether or not it'll apply to me. That said: the youngest person there is 18, so the kiddie table might be, er, insulting, and a number are from out of town, so can't really be booted out of the house while it's done in shifts...

Well if there are children you can have a children's table in the kitchen.

Yes, sitting down together is more traditional and much nicer, but it is more important that you are all together. I would suggest the buffet style set-up as planned, but go further by rearranging some of the "main room" furniture and bring seating from around the house. Use chests, small tables and stand (covered with festive cloths) and line the walls as much as possible. People could graze at these. Set the main table and reserve it for elders and infirm if needed.

Sports buffs will naturally gravitate to the TV. So, yes, sitting "wherever" will work, but it will work better if you design the "wherevers" for that purpose rather than just letting people wander to a spot.

Happy Holidays!

I am dealing with this also. We serve a beautiful Buffet and if there are lots of children, we let them eat at the dinning room table. The grown ups eat on TV Trays or just hold their plates. When the family becomes larger, it is impossible to seat everyone. Sometimes we also set a nice portable table for the children and then the grownups sit at the dinning room table. It is not easy to accomadate so many. I don't want to go to a restaurant during the Holidays. But I always have the feelings there is room for one more. I Love it.

each christmas eve we entertain roughly 20-25 friends and relatives. i agree that it is important that we all eat together.
several years back we purchased a table and chair set w/two extensions. when the extensions are inserted into the center of the table, we can comfortably fit 12 people are the table. to accommodate the other guests we have 2 tables (like at bingo) that we place as arms from the main table. each side fits 4 people. it's crowded in the dining room, but everyone each together. the food is served buffet style.
everyone appears to have a good time. they keep coming back, year after year.
FYI----this year our son is bringing 3 additional people, making our total # at 27.

The only other choices you have :is to rent a table maybe to expand your present dining situation so everyone can be together. Or set up tables for the children in other areas of the room may be a good second choice. I agree with you the whole point of holidays is to share the blessings we have received with the family. So go rent that table, even if it is used for the children. Have a great holiday.

There's the whole day to talk to everybody. When we get together some of us go outside and sit on the steps . Some of us eat in the livingroom and some sit on the floor. We are all different and some people do not enjoy sitting at the dining room table. Let them decide where they are going to eat and with whom. I have family members that get along in less crowded spaces, so letting them decide makes them feel at home .

This might seem obvious, but I bought a cheap card table from wal-mart and just covered it with a tablecloth, which gave us 4 more seats and was the designated "kids table." I also had to move a few things out of the living room and tuck them in the basement or my bedroom until the day was done.

Ever heard of the kid's table? Well, I have this prob. frequently. Some people just end up sitting in living room/kitchen at a seperate table or t.v. trays. I'd prefer this not to be, but my space is sometimes limited and I want to have everyone over-it's a great time either way!

when it happens I add/s"stick" an extra table (what ever the material/colour) to the dining table( it is simple if your table is not round- but even then it works), cover with same festive table cloth, decoration etc. It might not apply to your aethetic but all people have the opportunity to sit comfortly together.

I prefer sitting dinner for X-mas than buffet. If you don't have extra table or chairs borrow form relatives!

Mail, area of the newspaper, one extra pair of reading glasses, a roll of paper towels, an ashtray, a kit of incense, a candle, the can of furnishings polish (which ought to have been used to bathe the table...had we cleared the clutter). additionally the magnets that fell of the refrigerator, a potholder, and the garlic powder.

Living in Florida .. when the Weather is like it is ... there is ALWAYS The Patio outside which can accomodate the overflow. I just set up the picnic and patio tables and the chairs.
