African cichlids are best kept with other compatible african cichlids species.

These aren't 'community fish' and once your cichlids get up to 4 to 5 inches they won't have much tolerance for any other type of fish aside from certain scavengers.

Try finding out exactly what type of african cichlids you have and then get more that are compatible with them (not all african cichlids are compatible with each other).

If you have mbuna (which are the type most 'assorted african cichlids' are), add new mbuna in groups of 3 or more (because initially your established mbuna will treat them as intruders...4 new mbuna in a tank of 6 established mbuna fare alot better than 1 or 2 new mbuna in the same scenario.

I would first of all out more than 6 cichlids in the tank. Once they get older, there is more chance that a dominant male will kill off the rest, which is less likely if you have more.

The only fish that can really go with them, because of their aggression, are scavengers eg plecos and corydoras, but even these sometimes don't work. I have a red tail black shsrk with mine and it has done well, it's now the biggest in the tank and has no fights with other fish

Always best to keep African cichlids with African cichlids. There are so many varieties you will never be bored. Start mixing other fish and you may have problems!
