So at high loads, high torque, you're not getting power to the wheels.

If you have high revs on the tach or can hear them by ear, then your clutch or automatic transmission is slipping. It will be worse the more stop and go driving you've done that outing and in hot weather. You can hope that a clutch adjustment would do it, but more likely, the clutch plates are nearly gone and/or glazed and you're looking at a moderately big repair.

If the engine lags down without making much power, one possibility is that the "passing gear" in an automatic transmission isn't kicking in when the manifold vacuum drops. It could be just a disconnected vacuum line or a bad diaphragm in the vacuum-actuated mechanism. If you stomp on it at 55 mph, does it kick down a gear and rev up? If not, there's the problem. Likely a lot cheaper to fix.

Also consider vacuum leaks (loose hoses, loose/cracked intake manifold). Or a marginal fuel pump or partially clogged fuel filter could be restricting a high flow of fuel.

sounds like either your clutch or your transmission is slipping.
