Wow sorry for you there.

It is hard to say. It can be developed according to some psychologists. It can be affected by education and mental development. High comedy requires a level of education to understand the joke. Political satire it is funny but you need to be up on current affairs.

Children love slapstick and many men like physical comedy and women like thinking comedy. It isn't so much a man vs woman thing or women are smarter but how they communicate. Women stand ups spend lots of time on self depricating humor and stories of personal experience. Men seem to have lots of one liners and outward humor in situational ways. Something funny happened to them. Men also love action movies and sports so maybe are conditioned by society to find the Stooges funny. I personally don't find slapping funny but I have a pretty well developed sense of humor.

Since childhood I have always joked and liked being the center of attention too. I grew up on and love Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, SCTV, satire and sarcasm. I miss shows like Arrested Development but it didn't have wider appeal. It is a gift in a way but I grew up in that environment. I never consciously tried to develop it. Maybe it is like a musical instrument and you have a talent but you need to develop it like a prodigy is born with it or someone who starts out weak and works hard to develop it.

I am sure if people are working unbelievably hard to make ends meet and are filled with stress that they may have trouble finding humor. People can have vastly different brain chemistry too.

I grew up on Bugs Bunny and not Japanimation. Bugs was always cracking smart aleck jokes and had some humorous timing in physical comedy. Today kids have lots of phsyical action and drama but not the humor we had.

Sometimes it can be a defense mechanism say you were picked on in school or you had a mean older brother you use it to cope as well. All I know is that it is considered to be a rather desireable trait in dating and it is something that people in various professional walks find attractive.

I would watch plenty of comedy like stand up and good movies.
Try to read about humor and development and maybe be a good listener to hear the timing good comedians have. My father can hear a joke that is hilarious and then he has poor timing telling the joke and we laugh at how he tells it because the joke isn't as funny when he screws it up.

I am also a Browns fan so I am used to tragic comedy. LOL sigh!

Don't sell yourself short.
Good luck!
