Why don't you buy for him/her a set of spices? He would use them for sure, and if the box is pretty decorated - a great idea!
Or some smelly oils. Or simply something universal - a warm jumper or a movie or a CD - depends on how close friends you are.

Something that shows you respect his/her religion as he/she accepts yours. How about the George Harrison CD "All Things Must Pass"? He was a Hindu as well and it's a classic album. Or, as the Hindi strongly believe in donating a percentage of their income to charity, perhaps you can give to a good charity in your friend's name. Check out the 4-starred charities at www.charitynavigator.org. Partners in Health has always been a favorite of mine as it provides doctors an medical supplies all over the world. When you fill out the form, write that you would like it to be sent in his/her name and give the address. They should receive a thank you in the mail. There should be a place to put in that information.

Best of luck!

Yes by all means. A Christmas card is as good. You may buy chocolate as your personal present to him as a Christmas gift. Christmas can be celebrated by everyone unless he has a strong objection to it or decline to accept the gift from you. But Christmas is a God's gift of salvation to everyone. If he accepts Jesus as the gift, he has the eternal hope and salvation.
