Nope, I don't confuse the two. If I'm giving an excuse it's because the reason is unacceptable to the other party.

To the offender this is a reason,
To the prosecutor this is an excuse.

The difference is weither you are judging a person or if you did something. People do things that they believe are correct. Very few people do things just because. Most of us are not so easily manipulated

But some people will always see a reason as an excuse.
