The most secure lock is the type with a couple of pins that lower into a matching plate on the door jamb. It resembles a large hinge. The second best is a dead bolt with a long tongue. There are also plates that fasten to the outside of the door that overlap the space where the tongue is. The have a pin that goes into the wall and keeps pry bars from being used.
No matter how strong the lock is, someone can always break a window.

All jokes aside. A barking Rottweiler!!!! Dogs are a very good B&E deterant. To look at just securing your front door is folly at best. Most "bad guys" in their right mind( I know, most are`nt) would`nt stand out front forceing your door for all the world to see. Most would go for an out of the way opening. That`s were a good K9 comes in. And possibly a few good next door neighbors!!

I did some security work in my youth. If you are serious about securing anything, you need an on sight inspection by a pro.
I could offer a dozen solutions to the problem as I perceive it and all would be incorrect because I didn't understand the problem.
Things to consider:
Construction of the door
Construction of the jam
Direction of swing
Location and number of hinges
Secure it against what
There is the tip of the iceberg.
I had a client once with a Alzheimer parent. His concern was to contain the person.
Another was concerned about criminals he had testified against. See the difference???
Good Luck, and do consider hiring a pro, especially if you are concerned for your safety on an ongoing basis.

from what?
weather - try weather stripping and fill in any large holes that allow wind through.
if you mean locked to prevent unwanted entry - I suggest you get a solid core door.
then on the hinge side drill 1/4" holes 1" deep into the door every 12-18" and matching holes in the door frame. then glue in 1/4" dowels 2" long.
then on the opposite side (the one with the door knob) I would place 2 dead bolt locks (double keyed) with the throw going completely into the door frame, with a snug fit, not alot of play. place them 1/3 distance from the top and bottom.
you can do the same with steel doors, but it requires welding and use rebar instead of wooden dowels.
the only thing else you can do would be to add a KD-Bar across the door.
WARNING! if you make your home or business inpenatrable, remember the EMS/FIRE/LE personnel will not be able to get to you when you needd there help.

depends on how much you have to spend or value your possessions , you could get a steel angle iron fitted on the door shut on the inside so that the the locks fit into it, and if you fit your door so it opens outwards .this is more secure than opening inwards. but in the end it all comes down to money the more you can afford the safe you can make your door . but do not for get your windows as well , as they are important as well
