Because America has a long tradition of anti-intellectualism. Anyone perceived to be "too smart" (how can you be *too* smart??) is made fun of, from both fear and envy. Instead we worship superficialities such as looks or sports ability. It's embarassing that our celebrities are actors and football players instead of those who contribute far more to our lives, namely scientists.

I know what your saying American kids are a low percentage in math then in any other country, Europe i suppose has the most intelligence in math, but i think American children are doing below average work in math , because they dont know the value of numbers, and how they work but otherwise i know why they would probably fail a test, its just because they know they are bad at it and then they just blow the test, so that catches on and more and more kids start doing the same thing.Math is America's worst subject and that wont change unless kids start understanding how useful it is.

Many of them are not. American colleges and Universities absolutely dwarf all the rest of the world combined by any measure. Obviously we are doing some things right. That being said, the reason why a lot of kids fail at math and other subjects is because they are not self disciplined at that age, certainly not to the extent that kids are in other countries. Parents and society are chiefly to blame. Kids are not stupid, they just don't make the effort that their international counter-parts do.

Our teachers teach the math needed to pass the state exams and not to help a child succeed. They spend the majority of the school year teaching just what is on the test because the more kids that pass the state tests, the more money the district's get from the government. It's all about dollars and not education.
Well, that what I see anyway.

Because they dont have Mrs.Hardy.
No, Im kidding....
I think that they only teach math in America according to the state test level and what will be on the state test. For us, its the FCAT. I mentioned Mrs.Hardy because she makes it a point to teach us what we will need to know in real life rather then just what we need to pass the grade. She tells us her job is to teach us so we get it when were older.

Maybe because kids aren't trying enough to study. But kids from other countries want to have a better life because the life in the U.S is different from other countries. So they work harder.

I think it would help if we started teaching languages earlier in school. Most european contries do this and it seems to help overall. Also, I dont think education is veiwed as important in enough familes. So kids are taught from an early age not to care about school.

one thing to consider, a higher percentage of americans go to school, finsh threw high school level,, then the percentage of alot of other countries,,,,,, so we dont have just the brightest being tested,,,,nor just those who can afford school ,,,,etc, so while we probably do need to emphasis math and english ,,,,,i think overall we are doing fine,,,
