"Kissing Up" means getting one's good side. It's like trying to get a promotion or pay raise. People will say all kinds of flattering things to get certain advantages or privileges in order to benefit themselves. Other terms that mean the same thing are "Brown Noser, A** Kisser, Teacher's Pet, Goodie Two Shoes, etc. There are a number of phrases like these that all mean the same thing--to get one's way by trying to flatter someone else. Hope this helps.

Kissing up is a slang for being polite or nice to get something in return. A ksiis up is someone who is extra nice to an authority figure, like a teacher in order to get a good grade. It is called kissing up because one usually does it towards someone "higher" in authority.

What does "kissing up" mean?

Trying to get into someone’s “good graces” by flattering them, faking that you are “showing great interest in what they say”, being “extra nice”, giving a gift, laughing at non funny stuff, . . etc. In business, flattering your boss.

Quite simply it is going overboard to make amends for a perceived wrong OR trying to do everything in your power to impress a person. Similar to "brown nosing".

This is something I tell my kids to do in school with their teachers. Nothing wrong with it if it grets them the extra attention and help they need from their teachers.
