Our brains are still working, and processing information from the day. Sometimes it processes information in a way that appears to us to be a flash or excerpt of some event or situation that we may not recognize. These events may appear to us as a twisted or distorted view of things that have really happened, or they may just appear as something that we've never seen before (for example, sometimes I dream of people that I've never seen before). Our brain is making sense of information in its own way, and does not always appear as logical as we may like. That's why our dreams symbolize certain things, and can be translated into something that is more pertinent to our lives, such as our current stress level, love life, friendships, etc. Although we do not dream situations exactly as they are in everyday life, they have logical connections to our life.

Every mammal dreams every night, whether the dream is remembered or not. Also, it is possible to die in your dream, contrary to popular belief, without dying in real life. The actual mechanisms of what our brain goes through when we dream is complicated, and would probably take a fair amount of studying to truly understand. Hopefully this answer was complete enough, but if you were looking for a deeper explanation, my apologies.

Dreams may well be the brains way of getting rid of excess information that we have taken in over a period of time and also tries to make sense of this information.

Our brains are going through memories and informaniton stored in them. When we are unconscious, our minds try to peice together all that stored information any way they can. Chaotic, nonsesical dreams are the product.

Our spirits are still living. The biological body is weak, that's why it needs to stop and recharge.
