I'm not a mental health expert, but as I recall from what I've read, dreams are the brain's way of assimilating what has happened during the day, sorting through the conscious and subconscious thoughts and reconciling them with each other. This process is important to our sanity, and people who have been deprived of REM sleep for more than a week have been known to have strange hallucinations.
