My 20 year-old cat passed away about six weeks ago. I intended to get another one after the holidays. I can honestly say I like dogs and cats the same but for different reasons. I've never had a dog before and there's nothing like the company of a nice cannine. The issue is I live alone. My schedule would permit me to take care of him (What's a good breed for chauvanists?) mostly by myself. I can afford to pay for a dog walker and occasional boarding. But I believe that a dog needs to have an extended family. I can't provide that. They're social creatures. Usually when I socialize I go out. I'm concerned that I couldn't fully provide for the dog's emotional needs. I'm also concerned that having to do all that extra work would diminish the pleasure of having him.
(Yes, I said HIM!) If you have a cat that gets lonely you can always get her (Yes, HER!) a buddy and it's very little extra work.
Whadaya think? P.S. I love Shih-Tzus. Feel free to e-mail me any doggie pics.

Get another cat. Your concerns about not being a proper dog owner are valid.

If you like dogs, you can volunteer at your local animal shelter. I'm sure they have lots of dogs that would love to spend time with you.

=)

y not get a dog and a cat?if u get them at the same time and they are the same age, they will grow up together as best of pals,no nervousness or cat/dog rivalry.this is a combonation that really works well, and if u get a shih-tzu,he and the kitty would be roughly the same size as well, and so neither would feel intimidated or threatened.this would prevent the dog, left alone while u go out,or to work, from feeling bored, needy and destructive.even if ur only gone 3-4 hours, some"only" dogs, will chew things in "seperation anxiety."having a cat buddy will keep him entertained.its best to have male-female pairs, even in different species,so that they dont feel rivalry or the need to compete with each other and mark their territory.i know of one friend with a pekinese boy and an orange girl kitty, the 2 are so close, everyone refers to the cat as the dogs "wife>"(of coue, both are fixed)any way, good luck!!!!!

My personal advice my friend: go to a Shelter house and pick the dog that turns more friendly to you. Over a year ago I found a dog a block away from my building and I decided to pick it up, today he is my VERY BEST FRIEND!. I work too much and I see him at night only, but I give him a very long walk and he gives me all his love in his eyes. I thought I could not afford to have him but i did. We go to the Beach together, to the store, etc. All my neighbors love him and the kids love spending time with him. Makes my life so happy now

if u don't have the emotional time to give a dog, then u shouldn't get one. Cats r their own people and can take u or leave u and don't need as much work as a dog does. Maybe u'd better stick to the cats.

No I think u shouldnt get a dog because they need more attention then cats a usually people forget about them and since you say ur lonely you'll probably not be lonely for long you;ll get a girlfriend and forget about your dog so I think you shouldnt get a dog..TRUST ME

I think youre very responsible for even considering your time as an issue. most people with limited time to spend with a pet, dont really care. My vote is for another cat... they dont need as much attention. Good luck.

dogs require alot of time. if you work long hours; think about how fair it is to leave the dog at home. I had never used a crate until I adopted my latest puppy. A great investment.
