They did'nt want to upset Charlie. So everyone else pretended they were mute. They also moved as fast as him to keep up with him. They also wore the same colour clothes...all black and white.

Charlie Chaplin was not mute. Rumour has it he went to his first audition and the director said he was great until he opened his mouth, so he vowed not to when he performed in the future.
The reason other actors don't speak in his films was because they were filmed during the silent movie era. The technology hadn't been developed yet to add sound to film. That's why the actions are exaggerated so you still get what's going on. There was sheet music to accompany all movies too, which would be played by a live person in the theatre while the movie was rolling.

Charlie Chaplin wasn't a mute. When he started in the business they didn't know how to put sound with film. Somebody would play a piano or something while you watched it. But then they discovered how to make 'talkies' and Charlie did make some good ones. Those were the days - silent movies!

Charlie Chaplin was not a mute, and none of the actors spoke because this was silent films.
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. KBE, (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977), better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an English comedy actor, becoming one of the most famous performers in the early to mid Hollywood cinema era, and also a notable director. He is considered to be one of the finest mimes and clowns caught on film and his influence on performers in both fields is great.
Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities in the silent film era: he acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually even scored his own films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 65 years, from the British Victorian stage and music hall in England as a child performer, almost until his death at the age of 88. He led one of the most remarkable and colourful lives of the 20th century, from a Dickensian London childhood to the pinnacle of world fame in the film industry and as a cultural icon.

It is amazing what you can do despite a disability.
Chaplin used other mute actors in a show of solidarity. However, in his later films he changed direction and got people to dub in dialogue for him and his actors.

I pretty much agree with Lucee and can't add much more except that he first spoke (well sung, actually) in the movie Modern Times. Give Lucee the 10 points.
