Husband is insisting that wasps in the loft have chewed a hole through the plaster. Anyone know if this is feasible? He says they can chew through wood to make holes to build nests.

Yes, it is possible.

I have a great admiration for the bee/wasp/yellow jacket family of insects. They are very strong & resorceful.

wasps can chew thru just about anything unless your plaster is drywall...they tend to just do wood and paper like surfaces
