I'm assuming you mean "1 from bottom" as you already said "4 from top." First find the dimensions of the inner box. The big rectangle has length 3x - 1. The inner box is 2 from the left and 2 from the right, so its length is (3x - 1) - 2 - 2, or 3x - 5.

Now find the width of the inner box. its 4 from the top and 1 from the bottom, so its width is (5x + 2) - 5, or 5x -3.

To find the shaded area, subtract the area of the big rectangle minus the area of the small rectangle.

The area of the big rectangle is (5x + 2)(3x -1), or 15x^2 + x - 2.

The area of the small rectangle is (3x - 5)(5x - 3), or 15x^2 - 34x + 15.

Now subtract. The answer is 35x - 17.

Hope that helps and good luck!

The way you typed it is confusing. But you need to find x at some point, and the area of the rectangle. It looks like you left something out too. I would draw a picture, they always help clear things up.

you have to find the area of the outside box and the area of the inside box then subtract them

Find the area of the outer rectangle.
Then find the are of the smaller rectangle.
then the answer is area of the larger - the area of the smaller.
