Here is a top list of free antispyware
Spybot S&D
Windows Defender
Ad Aware Se Personal
AVG Antispyware 7.5
SuperAntispyware
If you don't have any antispyware protection, use Windows Defender for
real time protection.
If you need a firewall, use ZoneAlarm Firewall free.It is good.I
tested against Norton(paid) and this is better.
Download Spyware Doctor(Trial version) and do a scan to see what is
on your PC and try to remove as many as possible with the free
antispyware i listed.Spyware Doctor WILL produce false positives
to encourage you to buy it but is not a rogue antispyware program.
Clean your PC as much as you can.And run Spyware Doctor's scan again.
If it detects 3 or less, you are clear. Those are false positives.
Go to www.ewido.com for free scan and removal.
Remember, just like antivirus, run only one antispyware's real time protection and
not both at the same time.
Firewall:RUN ONLY ONE
Antivirus:RUN ONLY ONE
Antispyware:As many as you want,but i recommend 2 is enough.But if
you are a paranoid like me,install as many free software as you can.
But it may slow down your PC.
Hope it helps.

your computer may slow down because of other reasons, for example you've installed a complicated program not long ago and it takes lot of memory.
if you really think you're computer might be infected by spyware, let me tell you this: antiviruses don't deal with spyware/adware and stuff like that. so, no matter how many antivirus scans you run, they won't find anything, but your machine might still be affected.
here's a list of downloads and reviews of 74 anti spyware programs:
http://www.2-spyware.com/anti-spyware
just pick the one that fits your needs. let me advise: good anti-spyware should release updates often (to catch the newest threats), it's should have deep file scan (to catch ALL malicious files) and also good antispyware should have real-time protection to prevent spyware from coming to your computer.

windows defender is by far the best spyware and adware remover... download the latest version... not the beta 2 version...
zone alarm pro is the best firewall...
these two in combination with tuneup utilities 06 or 04 is the best combo to keep ur comp smooth and secure...
symantec antivirus is a very good antivirus software which does not use much system resources...

it depends on what OS(operating system) you are using. if you are using Windows, i suggest that you always turn your firewall on and download "windows defender" which is an anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware software. Enjoy. :)
