Dark got mad one day and kick it in it's butt.

Seriously, any object with mass can not travel faster than light, but any object with zero mass instantly accelerates to the speed of light.

This has been demonstrated in cloud chambers.

Why the speed limit? I can (and have) show why nothing with mass can exceed the speed of light but can not show why the speed of light is what it is.

Maybe there is an old gray haired bearded guy with a speed limit sign and a radar gun giving tickets.

The speed of light, not just good idea, it is the law.

The speed of light is predicted by Maxwell's equations, formulated by James Clerk Maxwell in the 19th Century. They analyze the physics of electromagnetic fields based on fundamental physical constants like the permittivity of free space, and thereby determine the speed of light.

The math is very advanced; I have read the derivation but I do not understand it.

One of the parameters of the existence of a photon is its speed
Which happens to be Thirty-billion centimeters per second.
It would go faster but a quantum time unit limits it to what it is!

It's based on the geometry and mechanics of the universe.

There are many research and theoretical physicists trying to determine why lights speed is what it is, as well as the other constants of the universe.
