I received a lemon tree about a year ago.
It became infested with scale. The scale was so bad that we removed it from the dirt, cut all the branches down, sterlized the roots, and chemically treated the new dirt.
Suprisingly, it is still alive.
But now, about four months later it is infested with fruit flies. I am treating it with "Fruit and Vegetable Insect Spray", but I think it's starting to burn the leaves.
Any ideas how I can keep this poor tree form getting bugs?
I have no other plants in the house.
Thanks!

They are probably shore flies or fungus gnats (or a combination of both). They are a result of overwatering. The larvae live in the moist soil which is why spraying and killing the adults alone will not take care of the problem. To kill the larvae you must let the soil dry out (the tree is better able to survive dry soil than the larvae). After it's dry water it moderately, enough for the tree to get some, but not enough to soak the soil ball. Then let it dry out again. Do this 3 times and the larvae should be all dead. Coupled with the spraying the adults this should cure the problem. Once they are gone don't go back to overwatering. Water when the top inch of soil is dry.

Try a horticultural oil. You can get this at a garden center. I am suprised the tree lived through the scale.
