I agree, you don't need to spend a penny to make your site rank higher. You just need to know HOW it gets ranked and mold your pages around that knowledge.

You are asking about search engine rank only?

Understand this about search engines like google: Unfortunately, they rank you by the kind of traffic you have. How much traffic, and from where. A site that is less than a year old is going to have to spend some promotional dollars to get traffic. The coding and keywords help a little, but it is far down the list when considering your ranking in the search.

To get business on the web you have to think in terms of traditional business promotion: your market, advertising, finding a niche, creating a brand, etc. These are the things that will get you traffic. Not DHTML, XML, or any of that technical stuff.

hi, for google you can submit your url to them directly. this service is free-of-charge. However, chances are they won't take a second look at your website because there are simply too many submissions every day. for yahoo, you are required to pay them a submission fee and there is NO guarantee that they will list your website. tough luck, huh? the best way to get a listing is to work hard on SEO and lure the search engine spiders to your websites. good luck!
