In my house there are two WinXP, both very important containing work stuff etc. I have some cousins who have an old pc and was wondering is it possible to link this old pc up to my router and set it up as a dedicated email server, giving my own domain, ie myname@myname.com. Also would that make it okay for accessing it via the web, as it would containing nothing but the email server there would be no important stuff on it so I would just keep all ports open. Is this possible to do for free, and is there free software to do it?

Yes, you simply reformat + reload w/ Linux, and run something like Postfix. All that is free (opensuse.org, etc).

You'll need a static IP from your ISP.

Yes, you can setup and old PC but don't use Windows for this purpose. Either you make use of Linux or FreeBSD for the purpose of setting up and email server. You need to have a domain registered, though.

You can make use of SME server for this purpose which you can download from www.contribs.org. Just burn the ISO image to a CD and use that as an installer to your old PC. Your old PC must allow booting from the CDROM, though.
