well to say your computer is about 8yrs old boy what are you running windows 95/98
well to be fair here yes it could be the monitor on it's way out.

Is it a tower case? or a desk top,
one thing people seem to forget is that alot of dust accumulates inside a computer and is needs cleaning out at least once a year
dust can cause static or make the components over heat, so what I would do is take it out side take the top off and (do not touch any parts inside) blow out the dust or get a hover pipe and suck it out.
clear all the vents on the case too.... and try that for a couple of days see how it goes

Merry Christmas

Does it go funny colors and stay, or go funny colors and then adjust to its normal appearance? If it's the latter, then it's just degaussing and it's nothing to worry about. Most monitors do that when the monitor's off and it turns on upon a reboot or a boot.

If it's going funny colors and staying funny colors, the chances are that it's the monitor that is the problem and not the graphics card. It's very unlikely it's the card in fact if it's a recent problem that turned up as you describe it. Chances are you'll need a new monitor, but you can buy a nice one used and get a good number of years out of it if you ask someone in the store to help you find the best one for you in terms of what you want.

Hello,
I've worked with computers for 25 years, and repaired things like monitors for a living for 33 years. In my experience, your graphics card wont do that. Monitors can do what you describe but it is usually programming telling it to do that. Of course it could be the card... your operating system should give you a method of testing the graphics card. Op Sys = Windows XP or one of those.
I believe you may have a virus on your machine that is affecting the monitor. Some are malicious like that. No real damage, just aggravation. Do you have virus scan software installed? I think Norton or one of those could find and remove such a virus.
I hope this helps.

Hmmmmm...Yeah i understand your operating system may be Windows XP and there you have got the memory problem with it you will need to get some more Ram and if possible a VGA card too as you told your computers age is 8 years and i think it's enough for a computer.
Install Ram
And VGA Card
May fix this problem

hey there!
it is not a serious thing there...no wories...let me say that if ur screen card is a little bit out of the case...it could be the reason why the colors go funny and it look that way...it is easy to check the monitor cable and see if it is attached right or it is a little bit out from the case...if u checked it and days pass and nothing happen..so ur problem is solved if it happened again...it means ur screen card need to get changed...i mean the one inside the case...not the cable...it is so easy to find one that fits ur pc and monitor...and charge nothing...so hope that helps.
p s
u can click on the screen with ur mouse and that with right mouse...u will see the properties i the end of it u click and in this section u will see a window with word(display properties)...setting is the one that u can click and se what is ur resolution and if there is problem u can click at the right of it and it wil pop up a windows that tells u the kind of ur screen car and if it works right.
