ones with corners don't roll very good.

Actually I find this question is intriguing and interesting to pounder into, regardless all of those funny answers from our yahoo colleagues above.
Yes, round shape will mean the ball will be relatively easier to roll. "Huh, relatively?" you might ask. But, have you try to play in a muddy or water flooded court? well if you haven't you will find the shape doesnot help. The ball just stuck once it touch the ground, just like the square or triangle or octagone shape balls. A sandy field like beach football also relatively has to face this problem.
Actually during the 2006 world cup a bunch of geek tried to experiment with this issue and suprisingly they found the other shape (than the merely round) have their own benefit such as pressision, flexibility, aerodinamics, etc. One of the shape can make "banana kick" whoever kick it.
Whoaa.... everybody can be Ronaldinho or Beckham or Totti just by selecting a right shape ball.
Hmmmmm..... an open minded question, indeed.

Thats a really great question, I have been asking myself that for several years now, I am so glad you asked it because now I will get the benefit of all the amazing intellects on yahoo, Somebody must have the real reason for this.
However the simple answer is cos puffy footballers would moan if it was any other shape.

They`re not. In football you can play the game with a long ball and a square ball. Also a high ball, a low ball, a good ball, a bad ball, and even a ball that just goes sideways! Up The Posh!

Because footballs were originally made from pigs bladders and they were round and rectangular ones were a ***** to get up the pitch.....look at the trouble the rugger lads have with an oval one.

A football must be round otherwise when you kicked it ,you would likely damage your foot if you caught it on one of the edges.

Cos otherwise when you kicked it the corners would hurt your feet. And if you were a goalie and it got kicked at you it might poke your eye out. I can't think of any other reasons......

If they were any other shape then they wouldn't roll. Fancy kicking a square one, what would happen? It wouldn't go very far and stop.

Cos if it was oval, it would be a rugby ball, & square, triangular or rectangular ones wouldn't travel so well.
