To learn from our own ignorance and possibly one day make a UN or something that works and is not laughed at by Americans that started it.USA hosts the UN, but like most countries, we seem to be late on our Member Payments.
But to get back to the question, as a One World Society we should not allow such a disgrace to happen again, so we study how and what was done, this way it is hopefully never repeated.
While we are on this subject, which Holocaust are you referring to, see there have been a few, actually quite a few. The Nazi one is the most learned from only because some survived and Free Speech Witnesses saw what had occurred.
The Russian Holocaust is still rather unknown. But it happened.
The Catholic Church Holocaust is rarely spoken of, but it did happen.
The Spanish American Holocaust is rarely spoken of, but it did occur.
The Nazis efforts were to rid the world of Jews and Undesirables. Deaf,Dumb,Mute,Mentally Handicapped, Homosexuals, Gypsies, Old and feeble or any that could not care for themselves were candidates for the Death Houses. They did have a bad attitude about Jewish Peoples though, and a Homosexual Jew that was feeble minded wouldn't even get to take the train ride.
I did not know about Order 308, until I studied the Holocaust. Now that I know, if I ever see my Government attempting such Inhuman Cruelties I shall openly revolt.
Freedom is Luxury, and our Freedoms are getting squashed as each day passes, we move closer to Fascism, one day we very well could have Camps for Detainees and Undesirables also.

Not only do we learn how to prevent the past from the holocaust, but we also learn empathy.

What I mean by this is: There's a strong vein of antisemitism in this world and after learning about the holocaust, I came to understand the pains of another people. As a young girl I was vulnerable to antisemitism until I was taught about The Holocaust.

The benefits comes because I have a greater chance of making friends, because I have not chosen to shun a group of people. The benefits comes when I can share and experience, even if it is a small portion of the whole, a bit of culture of another people.

THere is a saying that those who do not study and understand the past are doomed to repeat it. We benefit studying the holocaust or any other political or historical atrocity to recognize when we are seeing it happen again, understanding the long term emotional and economic cost, and in a sense, giving those victims of acts that they had no control over the respect and recognition that their lives deserve.

Studying history is supposed to keep us from repeating our mistakes. Unfortunately this is not always the case. The Holocaust is an example of man's inhumanity to man. It is interesting to note that it began as a psuedo-medical activity. Persons deemed unsuited to to live in society were first placed in asylums. The, as funding became scarce after WW I, many of these people wereslowly starved and chilled to death, called "useless eaters" because they did not contribute to society.
The next step was to put the unfit on trains and take them to "institutions" where they were gassed and buried in mass graves. For a while families were sent letters informing them that their child or relative died from diabetes or while having convulsions.
The policy became institutionalized under the Nazi's and was widened to include what were termed "inferior" races. This term was applied most to Jews.
