My understanding is it was not a merger more than a purchase. Daimler purchased Chrysler.
If you are asking because you want a pure Mercedes with the impression that the Chrysler influence has hurt them. Check out the reviews and you will see that Chrysler rates higher over all than it's parent company Mercedes.
In fact Hyundai rates much higher than Mercedes. I was crushed to find this out cuz I really like Mercedes.

The deficiencies in Mercedes-Benz cars began before the merger with Chrysler. The last "true" Benz would be the Gelandewagen. The big, boxy SUV they just discontinued and replaced with the GL class. Before that it was the previous SL. These were the last cars designed with the spare-no-expense and only-the-best ideals that made Mercedes famous. Before that you have to go back to the late 1980s to find a solid Mercedes.

The new ones are nice, but they aren't reliable and they aren't built anything like the original cars of the past that made them a legend. They are about on par with BMW or Audi when they are lucky, usually they are a bit below those two brands. In the past Mercedes was light years ahead of almost anything, but that hasn't been true for a while and they can't blame Chrysler for it. It began a while ago with Japanese competition and other changes in the market that caused them to cut costs and get greedy to keep profits high. Corner cutting. Plastic where there used to be metal and so-on. Mercedes is a shadow of what it was. Look at a 1980s Benz and you can see this immediately if you know anything about cars and have a discriminating eye.

So far 2007 but next year 2008. Because Benz bought Chrysler does not make them any less a "true" Mercedes.

ALL MERCEDES ARE STILL PURE MERCEDES, JUST THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE MANUFACTURING TAG SAYS DAIMLER CHRYSLER AG, BUT MERCEDES BEING THE PARENT COMPANY IS THE ONE THAT LENDS INOVATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES TO CHRYSLER HENCE BETTER LOOKING MODELS AND BETTER DEPENDEBILITY BY THE NEW LINE OF CHRYSLERS, BUT 1998 WAS THE LAST OF THE MERCEDES WITH TAGS THAT READ DAIMLER-BENZ AG ON THE VIN TAG

If I'm not mistaken, the merger took place about 8 years ago. Anything before that should be 100% MB.

Anything made in Germany should be good, check if it got some foreigh parts other then Germany then I would stay away. By the way concumer reports do not rate reliability. Customer satisfaction is not the factor to judge how reliable car is, neither the repair history.

Any model designed and built before 1998 should be "all Benz".
