You want to wait until you get to a point in the interview where you feel comfortable enough asking the question, but yes, you should walk away from your first interview with at least an idea of the salary range for the position you're applying for.

I don't think so as long as you don't ask in your very first few questions. You want to focus on what skills you can offer to the company first and how are those skills going to benefit the company. Interview is to be in two directions. Yes, it is a time for the company to find out more about you, but at the same time, it is your chance to get to know the company as well.

If this is a part-time job or a limited duration job (such as two weeks until Christmas), it's OK to ask.
If this is a career job, wait until they offer you a job before discussing salary. Otherwise it sounds like salary is yor most important critera.
