About a year ago, I had amco rebuild my transmission on my 96 grand cherokee larado V8. Didn't notice any problems, but hardly drove it because the engine smoked so bad. I just pulled the motor to do a re-build and found a vacuum line with one of those nickle sized discs that usually go between two hoses tucked on top of the transmission. It looks like the nipple of the disc pointing away from the trans is broken off. Or.. this may be just a small filter to some line that is used to vent the transmission. I can't find any loose or extra vacuum lines from my engine, so I don't know where this one is suppose to connect to if it is a vacuum line. The other end goes to what appears to be a small box shape molded in the rear section of the transmission on the drivers side . It goes next to some kind of switch that has an electrical connection. I don't know if this is just a vent hose, or if it is suppose to be picking up vacuum from the engine. Any suggestions?

It could also go to the modulator. If that is the case, you would notice that it will hang shift. (won't shift smoothly as you accelerate) If it is just a vent for the transmission, then any good vacuum source will do.

It IS merely a vent and filter assembly. Most cars just use a vent nipple, but because Jeep is advertised as Off-Road, they are filtered and checked to avoid contamination with dirt, mud, water etc.
If still not sure, look closely at the decal on the radiator support where the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label is, and in close proximity there is required to be a complete vacuum diagram for the vehicle.
If that label is missing or illegible, run to the library and refer to the repair and shop manuals for Jeep in the REFERENCE section.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas
