it's probably an abbreviation for a latin or greek word, just like lb. is the abbreviation for pound

Maybe because "nu" is a separate word altogether (at least I think it is from seeing it in a few places), but then, so is "no"... but then, the "o" in "no" is the closest letter to the number 0, possibly the reason for the strange abbreviation.
