The disk drive wasn't working, and then it make a loud whirring sound and now it won't open or let me eject a disk. I want to try opening the laptop to get the disk out, but my wife wants me to take it to a service center. Am I likely to hurt the computer if I unscrew the screws and open it up?

Get a paper clip, straighten it. On the front of the drive there is a small hole, insert the paperclip into the hole, you will feel resistance, push a bit harder, straight back and this will pop the drive open so you can remove the CD

If you're not on a Intel Mac you can do this: 1. Restart the computer. If necessary, use the reset/interrupt button. 2. Immediately after the system startup tone, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F key combination. The computer starts up to a text-only screen, indicating that you are in Open Firmware. 3. At the prompt, type: eject cd 4. Press Return. 5. Type: mac-boot 6. Press Return

Try first this, next to the manual eject button in the CD drive, there is always a small orifice, insert a paper clip tip there when the laptop is off and should open, if not, take it to a service center

You do not have to take out any screws. There is a tiny hole next to the eject button. Take the end of a paperclip and stick it in the hole and push slightly. this should open the drive so that you can get your CD out. Remember not to push to hard.

Do you see that tiny little hole near the eject button??? If you stick a pin in there it will open the cd drive door.

You don't need to do that..
Somewhere on the face of the drive there is a small hole...
get a paperclip...unbend it...insert into the hole....
it will pop the drive open.

The disc is probably jammed, if it is the only way to get it out, is to take the drive apart, which is best left to experts.
PS, Listen to your wife.
