80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

Perhaps the person who asks this question needs to really ask themselves what it is they want. The point of living a life that would seem to most, very unsatisfying and unpleasant could be that life's effects on the other lives around it. Cannot we, in nearly any possible situation in life, have some sort of effect on others around us? And that effect can be positive, or negative, but there must be an effect in some way. If a person's existence does not seem important to themselves, they must remind themselves that it is important to the ones around them. Everyone has an effect on everyone else, and in any situation, there is a chance to be positive. In one single moment, no matter how small it may seem, an action, or word to add a positive to another human, creature, or the environment gives you a very important purpose. I think that would be the point of living, regardless of what you want or your own happiness, you will be rewarded somehow in your positive and concerned treatment of others. That alone should bring one happiness far greater than any personal desire. Perhaps you have set off a chain in the course of your life that somewhere along the way brought great happiness or help to another. Is knowing that not happiness in itself? Just a small and I own, inconsequential opinion.

Because life is a challenge. We weren't put on this earth to have everything in life handed to us. You have to work for happiness and the things you want. If you are unhappy, then change something. Find a hobby, make a new friend, whatever you need to do. There are ALWAYS ways to be happy, and if you want something bad enough, work at it. If you want a new car, work and save. If you want a boyfriend/girlfriend, start dating and approaching potentials... If you are unhappy, make yourself happy because you are the only one that can change. Others may affect you, but they can't change you. You have to change yourself...
