when i took them out not this much play

this is simple,if it's a 2.0 more than likely all you need to do is adjust them

When you removed them, you were de-compressing the lifter, and there was certainly less free-play.
You will need to adjust your valves. This must be done in a certain order and follow the procedure closely.
If you are not familiar with it (It sounds like yo may not be) then either purchase a repair manual for the car / engine or at least go to the library and refer to the manuals they have in the REFERENCE section.
Be careful about photocopying the manuals. Copyright laws you know. Most librarians are very aggressive enforcing these controls.
