- Drink a lot of water before your cheer (but make sure to make a bathroom stop!) If allowed, keep a water bottle by the place where you are cheering so you can occasionally get a sip of water to keep your throat moist

- Don't drink milk or eat dairy before you cheer. It kind of coats your throat.

- This may sound crazy, but do vocal warm ups before your cheer. Talk in different pitches, sing in different pitches, then yell/cheer in different pitches. That way, it is a gradual transition

- Your voice may be getting raspy because you are yelling too hard. You can still cheer and be heard without straining your vocal chords.

Many cheerleaders get what are called "vocal nodules", which are actually calluses on the vocal cords. These appear if there is chronic voice abuse.
They can be prevented, or will go away, with good vocal hygiene. Voice rest includes no coughing, throat-clearing, yelling, loud whispering, or laughing. Talk as little as possible.
Use your voice properly. Take as big of a breath as you can, relax your throat, open your mouth widely, and push the air out with your abdominal and lower back muscles. Don't use your neck or chest muscles, as they will narrow and restrict your vocal tract, setting you up for further vocal cord strain.
It usually takes up to six weeks to get rid of the nodules, if you have them. If it is only vocal strain (when the vocal cords are irritated and swollen), it will clear up in a week or two.
