You do it just like you solve for an equation, isolate the variable (x) on one side.

i.e.

x + 5 < 3
x + 5 - 5 < 3 - 5
x < (-2)

However, if you have something like this..

-4x > 20

You have to reverse the sign after performing the operation. You ONLY do this with a negative coefficent.
