Considering that the Wii is backwards compatible with all Gamecube games-- not to mention the fact that over time you will be able to buy any game from Nintendo's massive game library all the way up to the N64-- the Wii is going to be your number one choice. You get the functionality of the wiimote for the newer wii titles, and the enjoyment of gamecube games with the older control.
As for which games to get, It depends on what you like to play. I'm an RPG person myself, so I can give you some recommendations in that arena, but if you're going after 1st person shooters I can only mention the ones I know were big successes.
RPG's: Tales of Symphonia (A large RPG game, part of Namco's Tales franchise; it takes anywhere from 50-70 hours to play, depending on how many of the ample sidequests you do.)
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker (Lots of fans were put off by the cell graphics in this game, but once you actually play it it's hard to imagine the story animated other way. It comes off as being "lighter" than the other Zelda titles because of its bright colors and simple designs, but the as the story progresses and Link is introduced to more characters in his oceanic world, a dark edge to Windwaker's world emerges, leading to an ending that is one of my favorites in the series. It's a great buy, well worth the twenty bucks you can get it for now.)
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Haven't played, but Zelda fans have been exploding with joy since it came out for the Wii; it is apparently the crowning glory of the Zelda franchise, and Zelda fans know their stuff. I know this is the game I expect to find under the tree next Monday.)
Action/FPS:
Prince of Persia:Sands of Time (I own all three PoP games, but this was the one I enjoyed the most. It's the first in the series, and we get a better sense of the Prince of Persia's personality, not to mention the inclusion of his surprisingly entertaining female sidekick, Farah. They have a lot of witty repertoire during their scenes together, and she can hold her own in battle for at least fifteen seconds or so before you're forced to run and save her for the first of what will be six or seven times. Overall, it's a great action RPG game, and it's well worth the money.)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (Owning this game should be required by Nintendo law. I have yet to meet anyone in possession of any Nintendo system above a Super Nintendo who does NOT own a version of this game. If they do, avoid them. THEY'RE CRAZY.)
Metroid (A popular Sci-fir first person shooter franchise starring Samus Aran, a bounty hunter. It was one the GC's most popular games, but I'm not a fps person, so I haven't played it.)
Resident Evil (I believe this is first person shooter, but I like mindless horror games even less than I like regular first person shooters, so again, I never played it.)
And those are all the ideas I have for you. Have fun playing with your Wii! ;)

Id go for the wii. The 150 these days is not much compared to other systems by microsoft and sony. Remember the wii is catered to the active person. Also gamecube games can be played on the wii. It is fuly able to do everything as a gamecube, but it can also support the next generation of games.

Personally, between the Wii and the Gamcube I would choose the Wii.
I really like the idea of moving around to play the game. It brings the interactive part to a whole new level.
You also have to look at what games each console offers as well. If one console has more games that suits your taste you, then you should go with that one.
