Hormones are released into the air by one woman, and then taken in by another, which is what causes this. We talked about this during the last day of A&P 1.
Some say it is like a sixth sense.. there is an interesting site about this here:

It goes under the same principal as pheromones, which I guess can be linked with sense of smell.

Our bodies are mostly water & the moon affects the flow of water. Don't beleive me? consider how the moon affects the sea. Anyway, left to nature our bodies fall in to rhythm will the ebb & flow of the waxing & waning moon. When women live communally this also makes their menstrual cycles synchronise but like I said it is to do with the moon.Very pagan sounding but true

I've been in both flats and workplaces where 'rag week' was a time feared by all! I agree with the answer about our bodies being mostly water, and I think its to do with how us women are so empathetic with each other as well.

yes I have always found that interesting. I think it's something to do with pheromones. Basically out bodies are more sensitive than our brains, so your body knows when somebody close by is menstruating. Weird but hey.

That's a really interesting question and one i'll be watching!...My daughter has her periods at the same time of the month as i do...really strange...i thought it was just us...
