my families tradition on Christmas eve is to just serve snack foods or finger foods. cheese ball and veggies/crackers is good.
summer sausage or sausage balls. ham and cheese petite sandwiches.......you get the idea just a lot of appetizers and punch or eggnog and everybody is happy. with almost no real cooking

I'd go with some finger foods and a veggie/dip tray and some chips maybe. spice it up with some spiced eggnog or plain, or some nice wine. a good snack his parents and you may enjoy that's easy is peppermint popcorn. if you google it you can get a simple recipe it's easy and delicious!! If you want to cook an actual meal, go with something light and less time consuming. If you don't think you have good cooking experience, run to your nearest grocery store...like publix, walmart, foodlion, or anything like that and get a $6 pork loin already seasoned...they come in a variety of flavors so pick one you like and all you gotta do is pop it in the oven for 45 mins, and then add whatever veggies you want :):) good luck

Usually on Christmas Eve we do a more casual meal...being that I'm cooking a large Italian meal on Christmas...
My and my husband usually make three or four party trays of finger sandwiches (tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad) and then the usual cheese & meat tray.
It's more casual for us as we have many relatives that travel for over two hours to spend Christmas Eve and Day with us.

Usually our Xmas eve's are casual as well. We do the not so exciting cold cut platter, an array of breads, if we're in a cold climate zone, we add soup, I make a green salad called a winter's salad with sliced red onion, feta cheese, almonds and mandarin oranges served with balsamic vinegar, sometimes we add a tray of lasagne and then we have snack items around for visiting with family and watching Xmas movies. Assorted dessert tray with cranberry bread, date bread, cookies, star fruit, pomegranate, assorted nuts, etc.
