Heat it up then turn it off and use a damp cloth - that should work!

To disinfect and clean your curling irons/flat irons throughly:
Use a paste of baking soda and a little water. Rub it on gently and wipe off with a damp, soft cloth. It'll definitely remove all that hair spray/gel gunk on your curling/flat irons. Hope that helps :)

Soak a washcloth with hot soapy water (a drop or two of shampoo works the best). Ring it out and clean the barrel by hand. If it's really gunky, an old toothbrush works, too.

Carefully use rubbing alcohol BEFORE you plug it in. The trick is to clean it EVERY time you use it. Don't wait till its all nasty and it becomes an almost overwhelming task. This applies to any task. It's easier to do a little every day than alot all at once.
