A family member has a 2004 Chevrolet Impala with a failing speedometer. The car was under warrenty for 36,000 miles but this speedometer failed at about 45,000 miles. Basically, it reads wrong speeds, and just doen't work right at all. When you're stopped, it reads speeds of 25 mph etc.
Do you think the dealer wil fix this free of charge?

doubtful - never hurts to complain though - if it is the speedo they have to get an exchange unit form the GM authorized repair center and change it out. The technicians on site aren't trained in speedo repair and GM controls the supply of units. GM tracks the warranty repairs and won't reimburse the dealer for that kind of work so its unlikely the dealer will eat the repair cost.

The dealer definitely will not fix this free of charge.
It appears that your speedo sensor is failing/has failed. Have the problem diagnosed by a reputable mechanic and be prepared to pay around $100 parts and labor for the repair.
You might call a local salvage yard and see if they don't have the sensor available. This should save you some cash.
Haynes offers a repair manual for your vehicle that is available at your local auto parts store or at www.amazon.com If you feel comfortable with mechanics work and have a way to safely raise your vehicle, you might want to purchase the manual and do the work yourself.

Same thing happened to my sister....her speedomoter and oil gauge and RPM guage work sometimes if they feel like it. She has a 2003 Tahoe. Said it would cost her approx $800 to fix. I just don't find this acceptable because I have never had guages stop working but GM seems to have quite a history of the same problems on vehicles that are way short of their expected life. I know they make a million billion cars so there are going to be alot of the same problems but you would think they would maybe have the kinks worked out of things they have been "perfecting" for models that have been around for a few years. I think they should just go back and make the 64 Impalas and the 77 Monte carlos. They were much more sturdy then.

maybe around 20 in city and around 24 or 25 highway.
