My desktop computer is connected with my cable modem via ethernet cable. I just got a laptop and I was wondering if there was anyway to connect my laptop to the internet using the same cable modem without interfering with my desktop's connection. Please explain how I do this(if possible) in detail. Thanks in advance!

The easiest to allow your laptop and desktop to share the same internet connection via cable modem is to have a router, a wireless one if your laptop have wifi capability. To do this, you connect your router's internet connection to the cable modem. You then connect your desktop to the router's available ethernet ports (they normally come with 4 available ethernet slots like linksys). Do the same with your laptop if you want to connect it with ethernet or through wifi (wireless). You just need to setup your laptop to automatically detect the available wireless network.

I hope I can answer your question. I have a desktop and a laptop. They both are PC's and they have Internet access. In order for me to get Internet on my laptop I had to call my Internet provider and tell them that I had gotten a laptop, and that I wanted to get wireless Internet. All I had to do was pay once for the router that they sent me and after that month my Internet price was the same as before. By the way in case your wondering what Internet provider I have, I have Verizon. I hope that answered your question.

That's easy! There are two ways. Actually, there is only one way that I remember, which is either buying a router/switch (they're not the same) and attaching the router/switch's 'in' port to the modem's 'out' port,or (if required) use a wireless connection. The only 2 problems with wireless is that it's slow and needs a PIN/password,but you can access it from practically anywhere.
Oh, and it also depend's on if you want the two computers to 'see' each other. I don't know why,but it does matter. If you really want to know why, then ask a computer technician.

You can buy a router if your desktop has a wireless network card. Just make sure you put the router behind your firewall otherwise people will be able to pirate your bandwith and steal internet from you. If you cant do that, you should be able to buy a splitter at an electronic store. With the splitter you plug the chord going from your modem to your computer into that, then buy two more of those chords, and plug both of those into the other end of the splitter. One chord goes directly to your desk top, and the other goes to your lap top.

Good luck,
Jeremy

you need to purchase either a hub or switch. you don' t have the right hardware to network those computers together.

if you had a 2nd NIC you could install that in the desktop, enable IP forwarding and allow the laptop to share the connection like that. not a good idea, wouldn't have much bandwidth available on the PCI bus

You can run server 2003 or 2000 using routing and remote access with two network cards in one computer, or you can buy a hardware router.
