Anything is possible ... I once heard that viruses were created by software companies in order to make anti - viruses necessary. If you have doubts about your anti-virus program you should check it and then report it because selling an anti virus that turns to a virus at some point is illegal ...

I doubt it very seriously. However, do yourself a favor... STOP PAYING FOR ANTI-VIRUS!!!
go to free.grisoft.com and get AVG free anti-virus. You never have to pay for updates of for the software... It's the best anti-virus there is (3 years virus free for me). Furthermore, if you want to ensure that you don't get infected... make a user account on your Windows XP machine that is a limited account. Use it for everything. You cannot install programs in it, you have to log out and log in as the Administrator user... the name you're on now... and then switch back to use it... but, if you can't install programs on a limited account, neither can viruses or spyware.
