I have been dabbleing with my bass guitar for a couple of years now. I move too often to get in to a band. I have finally found one and am nervous to meet them. How do I learn to play better with out them so I can impress them when they hear me for the first time?

The way I got better was playing songs that I know are too hard for me until I got them down perfectly. Play along with the recordings... You'll be able to hear when you make mistakes, which should help you become more of a perfectionist, which helps when trying to learn new ways of improvising and creating your own stuff. You should pick up some new ideas when you see how the best bass players play songs.

Another thing I'd recommend is to learn by playing songs you are familiar with, taking the general form (you know what I mean, like the four or five notes upon which the verses and choruses are based) and taking what you know about the scales and building off it. When you practice more, you'll feel more confident and see your success!

Everyone has a different way of learning. Some people excel by learning the scales and playing with sheet music. I think, to be excellent on your own, you gotta be able to just play, and that comes from being able to HEAR what you're doing and what your bandmates are doing.

I really think playing along with recordings is the way to go when you are trying to learn how to be impressive on the first time meeting a new group. The more you do it... Well, you know the phrase "practice makes perfect"!

The other part of it is chemistry. Being in a band, you gotta be able to be yourself, because personalities are a big part of your chemistry. I wouldn't say that all bands are necessarily looking for someone who can play well, but someone who will fit their style in the studio, on stage, and in life. Be yourself, man, and you'll find the right fit.
