Within the past year I have bought both AMD and Intel notebooks. The higher end Intel notebooks use either Merom Core 2 Duo or Core Duo processors. AMD's high end uses Turion.
The budget Intel notebook uses mobile Celeron while the budget AMD uses mobile Sempron.
AMD also has a desktop replacement class which has a brighter display and is a bit heavier but has less battery life than a regular notebook. The desktop replacement notebooks use mobile Athlon 64.
You can get a good notebook from either company. Just compare features and prices and buy what you like. There are no real advantages or flaws. Intel Centrino notebooks usually cost more but tend to have a little better battery life than AMD notebooks.
Ignore anyone who tells you that Intel processors are faster on a notebook, particularly with mobile Celeron. To get more power you have to draw more current from the battery and all notebooks try to conserve battery life. For example, the processor in my notebook will clock back from 2.0Ghz to 1.0Ghz to save battery charge.
Also, my notebook draws a lot more power than any standard notebook from either Intel or AMD since mine is a desktop replacement that runs with mobile Athlon 64. The processor is usally cooled quietly but whenever it warms up just a little the fan turns on and forces cooling air through. I've never had any problem with overheating. There shouldn't be a problem with overheating from either company since notebooks are all built in a similar fashion, typically with heat pipes and side cooling radiators. It also seems a bit absurd to suggest that HP can build a reliable notebook with a high power mobile Athlon 64 but can't build a reliable notebook with a lower power mobile Sempron. This is nonsense.

I work for a company that sells products that both AMD and Intel use in their manufacturing processes, so no matter what you buy you help me;-)
That said, i too have had problems with AMD's heating up and crashing. The AMD's were slower than a comparable Intel up to a few years ago. Then AMD held the Speed crown for the last year and a half to two. However Intel just took over the speed crown.
Intel's are more expensive because they pay a living wage in the US and Europe. Not slave wages in Asia.

In the enthusiast market Intel has since a few months the upper hand but I don't think as a average PC user you would feel any difference anyway. So go with the best deal you can find.

as you can see its really a matter of preference. they are both very good brands. amd had faster cpus for the past 3 years with the athlon 64 cpus now intel's are a bit faster with the new core 2 cpus. either one you get will treat you well they are both fantastic products. i'd recommend looking for one with a good price and features you need or would like to have.

IF you want better performance at a lower cost, AMD is better.
IF you want to spend extra money for average performance, Intel is better.

If you are an average computer user (few games, word processing, internet surfing) then neither brand would be any different. However, currently Intel processors have better performance.

look, i have worked with computer for years, and I have tried both intel and amd, to tell u the truth amd is not bad, and it doesn't heat up like intel, and its price is cheap, but intel processors live longer and are more stable! pay a little more and stay with intel, especially that you are used to intel, you will not like amd.
