Total truthfulness?? Of course not, let's be realistic: honesty is very important, but sometimes the truth is not the best option. Take this example: can you imagine during the Holocaust, when the Nazis were choosing people to stay alive and to be killed, men who were under 16 or 18 were killed, do you think that those who were underage really were honest about their real age?, of course not!!! So, their lives were depending on a lie.

I'm not telling you that saying lies is alright, but sometimes you have to say them.

Yes it is, it frees you from any responsiblity that comes with lying. If you lie you have to cover it up the rest of your life, not to mention the guilt.

So its always best to tell the truth.

Not really. You can hurt people terribly by telling the truth. Sometimes it serves no good purpose to do so, other than to ease your own personal burden. In that case, truthfulness is selfishness.

Nope! Sometimes telling the truth can get you to a lot more trouble than lying (ex. imagine saying to your boss that he is ugly)

Not necessarily, it just depends.
Take for example if someone asks you if they are fat. Even if they are, you don't say that. People who are overweight know that they are, they don't need anyone to tell them that they are. Social lying is sometimes equal to common courtesy.
